Tóm tắt:

This study aims to examine the problems and difficulties which third-year students of English face in translating news headlines from English into Vietnamese. A questionnaire and a translation test were administered to forty-nine third-year English majors to gather information about many aspects of news translating and students’ knowledge and perceptions of how they experience and translate news headlines. The questionnaire included twelve questions with three parts, the first part is about the knowledge of news headlines, the second part indicates difficulties in translating news headlines, and final part is translation methods in translating news headlines. The translation test consisted of five English news headlines for students to translate. Thirty-six students completed the survey, representing a response rate of 73 percent. The results showed that the main difficulties in translating English headlines into Vietnamese were unfamiliar words, grammar, and the contexts in news headlines. More than fifty-five percent of respondents (n=20) indicated that new vocabularies confused them. Eighty percent of respondents (n=29) misunderstood grammar conventions specifically used in news headlines such as the use of the infinitive form (that is to refer to the future). Twenty-seven (n=10) percent of students did not know the contexts of news. The thesis identifies the necessary skills required for translation in the media field, and thereafter makes suggestions for effective translation strategies for those involved in translating news headlines
