Teaching and learning English plays a very important role in Vietnam education these days. Along with selecting teaching methods, selecting appropriate textbooks is really necessary because textbooks have contributed enormously to success of English studying.

The present study aims to survey Tra Vinh University English Department teachers ‟ and English-majored students‟ attitudes and views on task content and task presentation of the text book - Interactions 2 Listening/ Speaking – Silver Edition by Tanka and Baker (2007a), published by McGraw-Hill.

In the survey a questionnaire for eight teachers and a q uestionnaire for eighty-two students in the second year of their bachelor English program were used to measure their attitudes and views on the text book‟s task content and task presentation and teachers‟ exploitation of content and task in the textbook.

The findings show that both teachers and students had positive attitudes and views on task content and task presentation in each chapter and teachers‟ exploitation of content and task in the textbook. However, problems on some strange themes and some difficult parts along with the same task presentation were found and reported in the study. The enlightenment of the problems embedded in the textbook has a significant meaning for foreign language teaching pedagogy in terms of textbook revision and adaptations.

Over the years of good management and strong linkages, Tra Vinh University (TVU) has acquired a number of good foreign partners which help TVU becomes more developed in education, research and staff exchange.

In addition, globalization advances at a rapid pace in politics, economics, and other fields, and people are now in the age of increasing borderless flow of things, people themselves and money.

Nowadays, command of English is required in many fields in contrast to the past when it was only needed in large companies and some industries. Viet Nam joins to some international organizations such as: WTO, UNESCO, APEC, ASEM, and Viet Nam corporate with many countries like: Belgium, Canada, Australia, Great Britain. At that time, a lot of investments from foreign countries will come to Viet Nam. That is not only the challenge for Viet Nam in general, but also the challenges for everyone. TVU is also one of universities in Viet Nam which has corporate with Canada in Vietnam-Canada Community Project, thus English communication skill for staffs is really essential.

Until now, more and more teachers and experts from others countries come and work at TVU either for a short term or long term. However, most TVU staffs and teachers cannot communicate in English so they need an interpreter during work to collaborate with the foreign volunteer workers.

As a government university, TVU plays a very important role in training human resources for Tra Vinh province and partly contributes to those of Mekong Delta provinces, with the motto “bring quality learning opportunities to the community”.

Indeed, English language is an important means to greatly expand opportunities for Tra Vinh University which trains manpower to society, and an important element of improving TVU’s international competitiveness.

To reinforce the international cooperation, it is imperative that teachers and staffs should improve their communicative skills in English language.

For the purpose of enhancing the English capacity of communication of Tra Vinh University’s staff as well as help Tra Vinh University get the target, this tactical plan is conceptualized.

This study investigated the first-year English major students’ responses to and suggestions on the implementation of Extensive Reading (ER) in their Intensive Reading (IR) courses in two semesters in order to give students and the instructor the experience to reflect how it was done and would be done better in the future as well as getting the language benefits. The twenty-nine participants practiced ER in the fifteenth weeks of semester one and one more participant joined the group in semester two in the same treatment duration of time. Students read graded readers and Andrew Lang’s fairy stories out of class time and wrote reading logs of what they read and kept the reading record to reach the target of 250 and 500 pages of ER in semester one and two respectively. Besides informal discussions, journals and interviews, a survey questionnaire was used to collect the data from students. The findings showed that students had positive responses to ER and gave valuable constructive suggestions to improve ER as they found ER benefits in improving their reading skills, reviewing their grammar and increasing their vocabulary. Several pedagogical implications in implementing ER were withdrawn from this experiment.
